Odds are you know the feeling: You wake up from a nap and your arm is asleep. Or your foot’s gone numb.
As you move it around, it starts to prickle and tingle. Gradually it wakes up, and a minute or two later you’re back to normal.
What’s this uncanny sensation all about? Is it normal or something to be concerned about?
The short answer is: It depends.
If it’s fleeting and infrequent
The medical term for this feeling of numbness or tingling is paresthesia, and its cause is the compression of a nerve, according to Paul Twydell, DO, a fellowship-trained neuromuscular medicine specialist with Spectrum Health Medical Group.
Paresthesia typically happens if you lie on a nerve while asleep or hold the same position for too long while sitting—like when you’re driving or reading.
Dutch feet?
When Dr. Paul Twydell came to work at Spectrum Health a few years ago, he noticed he was seeing a lot of patients with hereditary neuropathy.
Then he realized why: It’s because of the prevalence of people of Dutch heritage in West Michigan.
“In Grand Rapids, we see a lot of Dutch people with high arches and hammer toes, which can be an indication of hereditary neuropathy,” he said.
The good news is that hereditary neuropathy “progresses at a glacial pace,” Dr. Twydell said.
If the feeling goes away quickly, this phenomenon is called transient paresthesia, and it’s typically nothing to worry about.
People will wake up with tingling in their hands and think they have a circulation problem, Dr. Twydell said, but that’s not the case.
“It’s just that a nerve is being compressed in the wrist or elbow. And the reason it happens at night is we often sleep with our wrist or elbow flexed or underneath us, or in a strange position.”
A nerve is a bundle of “wires” surrounded by a layer of insulation called myelin, Dr. Twydell explained. Myelin helps speed the movement of electricity along the nerve.
“When that myelin is compressed, that means the messages aren’t getting through very well,” he said. “A lot of times it’s when the compression is released that (the tingling) happens”—as communication is being restored along the nerve.
The nerves most prone to compression are found in the wrist, elbow, knee and upper arm.
If it’s persistent or abnormal
So when might numbness or tingling be a cause for concern? Dr. Twydell recommends that people talk to their doctor if they experience any of the following:
- Persistent numbness or tingling in the hands. This is often a sign of carpal tunnel syndrome, which is treatable—the sooner the better to avoid severe damage and the need for surgery.
- Tingling in the feet, especially at night. This might be an early sign of a degenerative nerve disease called peripheral neuropathy, which is most often caused by diabetes or heredity. Neuropathy isn’t reversible, but it can sometimes be slowed down, Dr. Twydell said.
- Weakness of a limb in conjunction with numbness. This can be a sign of more severe damage to a nerve.
- Numbness or tingling that ascends up the legs or into the abdomen. This can be a sign of spinal cord inflammation or compression.
- Numbness involving half of the body or face. This can be an indicator of stroke, which requires emergency care. Call 911.
If you have persistent symptoms of numbness or tingling, your doctor may order a test of the nerves called electromyography, or EMG. This nerve study can help pinpoint the source of a problem and help guide treatment.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common problem investigated by Spectrum Health Medical Group Neurology in the EMG lab, Dr. Twydell said.
Tips for good nerve health
Your best bet is to avoid activities that cause prolonged nerve compression, Dr. Twydell said. Change positions frequently. Get up and walk around throughout your workday.
“If nerves are compressed over and over again, you can have more persistent symptoms that can eventually lead to weakness or disability,” he said.
Here are Dr. Twydell’s tips for preventing that numb or tingling feeling in your extremities:
- Wear wrist splints at night to ease problems with carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Avoid lying on your elbow while sleeping, and try wearing an elbow pad to bed to keep the elbow straight.
- Don’t cross your legs, with one knee draped over the other. That can compress the fibular nerve, which can lead to foot drop, a cause of tripping.
- Avoid the habit of sleeping with your arm stretched out or underneath your partner. Over time this can damage the radial nerve, leading to wrist drop.
- Avoid leaning on your elbows for extended periods. Try adding gel pads to the armrests of chairs, wheelchairs or cars.
- If you do a lot of computer work, use a gel wrist rest. Avoid holding the wrists in either a flexed or an extended position, which can damage the median nerve.
- Eat a well-balanced, low-carb diet. This is especially important for people with diabetes, who are more prone to neuropathies.
- Avoid alcohol in excess, which can cause neuropathy.
- Avoid taking zinc and vitamin B6 in excess, which can cause nerve problems.
Dr. Twydell admits that some of these tips are easier said than done. For example, it’s hard to change the way you sleep, he said. Yet, people who sleep in a way that compresses the ulnar nerve in their elbow “can cause some pretty significant weakness in the hand.”
And if you’re one of those people who rarely experiences numb or prickly limbs, consider yourself lucky. Some people are more prone to nerve compression than others, Dr. Twydell said.
If I stand still (5 minutes) my leg begins to tingle, then becomes numb, sometimes to the point that my leg doesn’t step forward when I want it to. I have had spinal fusion surgery in the past. Surgeon no longer practices. Where do I go from here?
Hi Frederick, We heard back from Dr. Twydell on your question. Here’s his suggestion:
I would suggest following up with his PCP first. It may or may not be related to his back. Sometimes, an MRI of the lumbar spine or possible an electrodiagnostic test may be considered once they have seen their doctor. That way, the proper referral can be made to guide the appropriate treatment.
I have a problem of tingling in my left arm, but not while laying down, it starts when I’m sitting up. When I lay down it goes away. The tingling is most prominent on the outside of my arm and hands to include my pinky and ring finger. This started about 2 weeks ago and has continued each day. I’m 65 with history of spinal degenerated disks in the lumbar region.
Thank you for sharing, Jeffrey, and I sure do hope your primary care physician can help point you in the right direction for relief. Best wishes to you!
I’m having same problems had lumber spinal surgery woke up from that both arms totally numb regained left arm but it’s been 32 days now with right arm still numb ring finger pinky top of hand all half way through arm up into shoulder numb tingling constantly throbbing nothing is helping can’t sleep constant pain norcos barely help nothing else touches pain what can I do about getting relieve ? Anyone
Jacob, have you had relief? I am so sorry you experienced this and I hope it’s gone now. I have some neuropathy of the feet. Nothing close to what you describe but I imagine you were miserable. Hope you’re better now.
My 10 year old son has been complaining about his left foot tingling. It is the top of the foot and is unbearable at times for him. What could be causing this?
Hi Rosalie! Thanks for reading Health Beat. It might be best to share this complaint with your son’s primary care team. They should be able to pinpoint the cause and help provide relief. Best wishes to you both. 🙂
I have the same exact thing in the same place right now im worried. What ended up happening?
Mine is body wide. Arms, hands, Legs, feet, and even an ear or my scalp.
I have to get up during the day, every 15 minutes to stop it and also I toss and turn all night long. I sometimes can’t move when half asleep and I’m stuck on my back until fully awake.
That sounds miserable, Kimberly. Have you talked with your doctor – or a neurologist – about these issues?
I have the same problem now started last night been going on for 6 hours have a doc appointment Thursday did you ever find out what causing it
Kim, have had same thing many times-can’t move or talk-I do all I can to move to no avail. Eventually, can move. Scary…
I had something similar in my 30s (40s now), that happened weeks or months apart. I’m generally healthy, not overweight etc.
Symptoms:
I go to sleep, and wake up 3-8 hours later and notice my arms, legs, and stomach muscles hurt really bad as if I’ve been excecising non-stop for 24 hours straight. No pins and needles, but just extreme muscle pains if I tried to move. Whatever was happening was only happening when I went to bed, and symptoms are noticed as early as only a few hours later. Again best explanation is it felt like I’ve done extreme excecising.
For example, I tried to sit up from bed and my stomach muscle hurt like I’ve done 1 million situps. I couldn’t even sit up. If I tried to flex my arms, my biceps felt like I had been lifting weights and a dumbbell for 24 hours straight. I couldn’t get up, not even to get to the restroom. I couldn’t stand up or walk during extreme incidents, so I just had to lay there in bed. 1-2 extreme times, my wife had to walk me to the restroom. I generally had my wife pull me up to sit up or to get up. My neck movements weren’t affected. No neck pains and I could turn my head no problems. Only neck down was affected. Breathing was normal, no pains. My hands and fingers could grip things no problems or pain. Just my legs, arms and stomach muscles hurt when I tried to use them.
Here’s the strange part. It wasn’t permanent. It might happen at 5 am, and I get up with my wife’s help. Then gradually as a few hours passes (or in extreme incidents, after 10+ hours), the symptoms slowly disappear on their own. I had zero other symptoms. My doctor had no clue what it was and I couldn’t and still can’t find anything online to match the horror I experienced.
Then after 1-2 years of this scary stuff (maybe a little over half a dozen episodes), just as mysterious as it had appeared, it went away and has never shown up again. Not once. It’s been about 10 years now.
Just recently my hands and feet are both tingling and pins and needles. I had chemo last year and never experienced neuropathy, could this be a delayed reaction.. my Dr did labs every thing came back good.. I’m not sure what’s going on..
Hi Pat – Glad all your labs are coming back great! Terrific news! Please do ask your doctor about your tingling and pins and needles. He/she may refer to you a neurologist, who will be able to give you some definitive answers… and hopefully relief. Best wishes to you!
Pat, I hope you are doing well. We’re you able to have any scans of your nerves or nerve conductive test completed. Hope it is resolved and you are feeling better.
Hi This year I have been diagnosed with Sjogren’s. I recently went through a period of idiopathic unintentional weightloss. 30 pounds in 6months. All tests negative, including an endoscopy ( well, mild gastritis and esophagitis) and a echocardiogram ( but a CT show s a CAC 102 and a stress test revealed exercise induced htn) with nothing to explain the weightloss. During 2 months of that time I lost the strength to lift a basketball or do a pushup.
Good news…much strength is back and I have gained 5 pounds. Hooray. BUT…
During the worst two months, my buttocks would feel pins and needles. I though it had to do with having to sleep upright ( excruciating dry eye that a talented ophthalmologist helped with autologous eye drops), however, it has in just 4 months it is now in both limbs, bilaterally. I feel it intensely in my arms and legs after a short nap, everytime I wake up, any time I sit still to do school work. Sitting feels like I have been sitting on a hard bench for hours even if it’s a memory foam 4 inch cushion.
It’s not pain, just extreme discomfort. I often stand up when working at school with my computer on a tall table ( I am a High School teacher). Unlike normal pins and needles, this does not have the painful return of feeling. There is no loss of strength or control. As soon as I move my arms or legs the feeling diminishes, until I am still again and it comes back.
EMG was normal on arm and leg… Tested when trying to resolve the weight loss.
Should I be going back to the neurologist with these growing symptoms? ( I already suspect they think I caused the weight loss intentionally for attention–I can hear them telling me it’s all in my head since the EMG was negative).
Does this type of neuropathy get worse? This developed pretty quickly from nothing. Can I anticipate it turning from pins and needles to the burning pain I keep reading about?
Thanks.
Hi Kayle, So sorry to hear of your ongoing health concerns. If you’d like to directly make an appointment with a neurology specialist, please call 616.267.7104 to discuss your neurological health. Best wishes to you!
Do you offer any advice or just tell people to go see their doctor. What service do you provide. Are you an AI not?
Hi, Mike. I’m not AI, but thanks for asking. Doctors and other medical professionals are best able to diagnose and discuss symptoms and potential treatments. We’d be remiss if we didn’t suggest people get the personalized, professional care they need to address their individual concerns.
Kayla, I hope you were able to find help. I have tingling in my buttocks and upper thigh. I also have cervical and lumbar spine compressions. I think it is related but I recently found out I also have a significant hip tear and wonder if it’s related or not. The pins and needles are unsettling. I am suspecting possible autoimmune issues as well. Have you found relief?
Just the tip of my left big toe has been numb. I have no clue what’s caused it because I HAD knocked my knee out of place but that’s better now, then one day after work it was tingling and numb. It’s been about a day and hasn’t gone away
Most of the time my left side has numbness and pins and needles. Left ankle and left thumb toe has more numbness. My left shoulder back hurts like hell. When I read slightest bad news it hurts like hell.
I have been feeling numbness and tingling in the right side of my body from head to toe, should I be concern?
Hi Irma, We recommend you call your primary care physician today to discuss your symptoms. He/She will be able to best diagnose and help you. Best wishes to you!
Hi Irma,
What’s the doctor said?
I am 18 years old, I don’t get much exercise, I do an insane amount of hand work, I eat a lot of carbs, I use my elbows to prob my head up a lot and I often make my wrists sore after hand work. At night recently I’ve had my leg(s) fall numb but not with pins and needles, and this morning I woke up at 6:20 and it is now 8:05 and it is finally going away. Which of my bad habits should I consider a first priority to change?
Hmmm… that’s a good question, Nicole. It’s great that you’re figuring out ways to improve your life now (most of us don’t come to that realization until our 30s or 40s). I might suggest you discuss your lifestyle and your symptoms with your health care provider. He/She will be able to give you the best plan that will make a difference for years to come. Best wishes to you!
For the last couple of days, I have tingling feeling in my left index finger, middle and thumb, a crawling feeling under my skin, going up my arm, and a pain at the base of my thumb.
I’ve had carpul tunnel before and had surgery. Can carpul tunnel come back?
Hi Margaret, Please do connect with your physician as he/she will have the best personalized answer for you. Best wishes!
I woke up this morning feeling tangles. I laid on my side thru the night n woke up and my whole left side was tangly. Waited fpr a cpuple min after getting up n this went away . usually I sleep with my arm under my head n this has happen since i was young. Im now 32 n it doesn’t happen alot only if I lay under my arm or my side .
I started a new job in February. There is a lot of walking and standing involved. I developed Morton’s neuroma in my right foot, which is very painful. It is mainly the second and third toe. But the pain is bad between my big toe and the toe next to it. It feels like someone is prodding with a knife there.
Now at night the soles from both feet start to tingle and feel like they are on fire. I can’t see my dr. for the next two weeks and for a neurologist is the wait time a year. I was seen by a podiatrist but he can’t help me since he isn’t allowed in the province where I live to do injections in my foot for the MN.
Could you give me advice? (I don’t have diabetes) thank you.
Hi Elisabeth – So sorry to hear about your condition. It sounds like you’re visiting your doctor in the next two weeks, and have seen a podiatrist. Perhaps you could share with your doctor the podiatrist’s recommendations, and inquire as to next steps for helping you get back to enjoying life? Your doctor should be able to share some good tips on how to mitigate the pain as you work to get in with a specialist for additional assistance. Best wishes to you.
P.s. I am from Dutch heritage. But live in Canada.
Hi,
Laaste week my whole arm just went numb and it started to get sore that the pain wakes me up then i get pins and needles i got spasma pills from clicks as they zaid it wil help me i drank them this week and now its in my hands i can make a fist but i cannot staighten my fingers and my finger tips has pins and needles in them the whole time and its very very sore it started to go again to my lower arm that its really pain ful? Oh and this is my right arm
Hi Nidine – We recommend you speak with your doctor’s office to get advice that best suits your personal situation. Best wishes to you.
I went to bed Wednesday night and woke up in the morning with half my left hand and arm completely numb!! I have iced it for 3 days and taken ibuprofen consistently and used a sling to take pressure off my nerves but nothing has changed yet??? What do I do?? I assume it is a pinched nerve! How long does it take to heal?
Pinched nerves can take a while to heal – a few days to weeks in some cases. If you’re concerned, we recommend you contact your physician to discuss options and your symptoms. She/he will be able to provide the best solutions for you. Best wishes!
Ok so it is completely normal to have no improvement yet? I just want to make sure I do the right things!
Hi Lindsay – Each person’s situation is unique, so I’d suggest you reach out to your doctor’s office to see what they’d suggest. If you don’t have a doctor, you could call MedNow, if you are in Michigan at the time of the call. Go to https://www.spectrumhealth.org/patient-care/services-and-treatment-detail-pages/mednow to download the app on your phone or computer, and you can call 844.322.7374. They have same day online appointments. Best wishes, Cheryl
So I’ve been experiencing this for months now and I’m just curious what’s happening. When I lie on my stomach, leaning on my elbows (mainly playing on my phone or doing something with my hands) my face ALWAYS almost immediately starts to tingle. Mainly on my right side. I can feel it in my eye socket, throat, lips etc.
Hmmm, Marie, I’d suggest talking with your doctor about these symptoms. S(he) will be able to give you the best advice based on your personal situation. Best wishes to you!
Hi Marie did you ever find out What the problem was because I’m having the same kind of thing whenever a lie or sit down on my back my face starts to tingle the first time it happened I went to the doctors and they sent me for an MRI which was clear did you ever get an answer??
Thankyou in advance
Tina
Hi, I’m having the same issue did you get any answers?
I had surgery on my right shoulder and now after pt and then just sometimes when I’m sitting at home or out my left hand and arm start tingling then pain come and it hurt real bad the hand start tingling first then it goes up the arm and then the pain start and it hurt real real bad
I am 26 years old, iv had some tear in the muscles, tendons and ligaments in my left shoulder in 2012, I normally get tingles and numbness in my arm/hand, but recently iv had a spike, I work construction and normally favour my arm, it had taken a good turn and was doing alot better, than about 3 weeks ago my shoulder went out on me, and numbness and tingles are very persistent, worse at night, periodically throughout the day, but have become regular
After a doctor’s appointment, sitting for two hours,my leg and foot became numb. It’s been two weeks and it is still going numb.
What can I do,.
Change your doctor? Usually when a doctor consistently has too much to do, (s)he brings in another doctor to help with the overflow…
My left arm has had an uncomfortable tingling feeling like it was asleep for the whole day what does this mean?
Hello, I’m 25 years old and I was sleeping and woke up really early and my left arm was kind of asleep with the tingling and all, which wasn’t abnormal in my mind, so shook it off and went back to sleep for couple hours and woke up and instead of the tingling, my forearm, wrist, and hand were pretty much numb. The main symptom is wrist drop and being unable to lift my wrist and extend and lift my fingers. I saw a specialist and he thinks and is somewhat sure I may have pinched a nerve in my elbow but isn’t sure without and EMG test, which unfortunately my insurance will not cover and I cannot afford at the moment so I had to cancel my appointments. I was wondering if you could provide any insight on what it may be and / or thinks I am able to do to exercise or treat my issue.
Thank you!
I was doing hiit training 5-6 days a week and noticed weakened knees. Then I had this on and of tingle down the area of where saphenous nerve would go(mainly lower leg and knee area).
Some days it’s completely gone and others, it comes back. The tingle is like a quick little sensation but then goes away. So it doesn’t tingle all day or anything but on and off. One day, I did a lot of walking and at the end of the day, my knee was in so much pain. Does this sound like simply a nerve issue or something more? Just so concerned because it’s been ongoing for almost about 2 months.
Hi Stacey! This is a good question, and it sure seems your body is trying to tell you something when you are participating in this high-intensity training. We recommend you lay off the hiit training until you discuss these concerns with your primary care provider. S/he will be able to provide you with the best care that’s specific to you and your body. Best wishes to you!
Hello
I am 27 years and I experience this condition about 3 days some time needles feels and some time not .
Can you tell me what’s the problem is
Thank you for being a Health Beat reader, Junaid. We’d recommend you discuss your health concerns with your primary care provider. S/he will be able to provide you with the best care that’s specific to you and your body. Best wishes to you!
I’m a 17 year old and have been experiencing constant tingling and burning sensation everywhere all over my body, even on the top of my head. Along with this, many other symptoms like nausea, peeing more frequently, headaches, and much more. I constantly stress and have about 2 panic attacks a day because i’m scared it could be something serious like a tumor. I went to the doctor 2 months ago and they did some tests like neuro tests and blood tests. Everything was normal but i feel my symptoms have gotten worse. But i’m so young and I stress and freak out everyday. Pls help. At this point my parents and everyone I talk to call me a hypochondriac but I swear something is wrong and I don’t want to die
Hi Trevor. So sorry to hear you’re going through this. Please share your symptoms with your doctor and again ask for help. He or she should be able to offer solutions. It’s not helpful for people to label others and minimize their symptoms and feelings. Please seek a second opinion. We’re rooting for you, Trevor.
Hi Trevor I’m going through the exact thing right now plus difficulty walking arm and leg weakness balance issue the both feet never stop tingling it’s affecting me physically and emotionally as well
For the last 4 weeks I have been home due to the Coronavirus shutdown. In order to stay fit I am walking 2+ miles a day. For the last 2 weeks after I fall asleep at night I wake up with pins and needles in my feet and find it very hard to fall back to sleep. Could the walking be the cause or something else? Thanks in advance for your help
Hi Mike, Thank you for sharing your home fitness regimen and for doing your part to slow the progression of COVID-19 in your community. We’d suggest discussing these symptoms with your primary care physician or his/her designated care provider during this time. If you call your provider’s office, they should be able to direct you to a virtual care or other option so you can get the best advice as it applies to your personal health situation. Best wishes to you.
Hi there! I know you may not be able to tell me what’s going on but lately. I’m 28 years old female, 97 lbs. More often than not, when I’m sitting/half laying down on the couch (I don’t wear any tight clothing, more so loose skirts, loose comfy pants, etc, use unscented detergents, soaps , etc) and especially laying down in bed on my back, it feels like prickly itchy, on my lower back sometimes but more commonly on my buttocks, hips and upper thighs.
There’s no redness, hives, etc. Which is why I personally think it’s a nerve thing. Stemming from my spine perhaps?
It’s not a nice feeling at all and is starting to cause more than a daily annoyance, 🙁
Any advice?
Hi, , when I walk I can only walk about a block before both of my feet become numb, I can wait about 30 seconds and it goes away but when I walk again maybe 20 ft both feet becomes numb again and if I continue to try to walk through it I lose my balance because I began to lose feeling in both feet
Hi Roosevelt, We’re sorry to hear this. We suggest you discuss the difficulty you’re having with your primary care provider. He or she will be best able to offer you help specific to your situation… and hopefully get you back to walking again soon. If you’re experiencing a sudden loss of balance or sudden onset of weakness or tingling, please seek care at your nearest emergency department.
I have exactly the same thing. If I walk round the block then first 5 minutes absolutely fine but after 7 or 8 minutes my left foot goes completely numb and I have to stop. Stopping and stretching for 2 to 5 minutes gives temporary relief but from this point onwards the numbness keeps kicking in every couple of minutes.
i am 62 years young to date a heart attack and a stroke to date i had 15 seizures i get pins and needles and some pain in my toes mostly at night when i sleep. please help me what can i do?gmail
I had a motorcycle accident and I had surgery on my foot that I had broke in 9 places and a plate and screws was put in my foot then I end up breaking my tibia and fibia in another motorcycle accident and now my foot is tingling and feels numb what does that mean and what should I do?
As people age, they lose calcium. Go to the doctor and get checked out. If you don’t have a doctor, go to your hospital Emergency room. It might take a while, but ER doctors are curious folk—they’ll find what’s the matter!
Hi, said her left toe has been tingling since yesterday and I have woken up to feel the sensation on the side of my nail I have notice it is pink and when i put pressure on it or touch the nail it hurts.
Hi
From the past 2 months i have been getting pins abd needles sensation in my hands and legs especially when waking from naps. I also have neck pain and back pain which keeps repeating. Another thing i have observed is i get these pins and needles sensation only after naps i take in the afternoon.
Hi!
I have a pain in my calf for over a year now. Most of the times it happens at night when I try to sleep. I thought the pain would eventually go away. But now I have a tingling and burning sensation in my feet and the pain also gets worse. My doctor said it had something to do with the muscles that blocked my veins. I took medications as prescribed but there has been no improvement.
Hi
I had a back injury when I felt in the swimming pool steps with 2 weeks before my pins and needles started in my left foot (sole of the foot) after 2 days the right foot started as well and now after 5 days it started going up on my left leg . I take vitamins daily which contains B6 and zinc . My GP said to wait 2 weeks and if I still have the pins and needles to come for a blood test . Do you have any suggestion what could be the cause for the pins and needles constantly feeling in the sole of my feet ?
Thank you
Alex
Hello.
I have tachycardia after waking up from sleep. Never in wake condition, always waking me up from sleep. Everytime I have had it my feet and hands were numb. It usually goes away after a minute of deep breathing. I ve been to the cardiologyst, did ultrasound and was on holter, results are perfect. Heart is fine and healthy. Why do I have these waking up from sleep tachycardia ?
Hi I am 15 when I sit for maybe around 30 mins to 20 mins at a time when I stand my feet tingle. I am prone to migraines. I don’t sit strangely either. Do you have any idea what is wrong if anything at all. Thanks so much
Left side from my face to my feet burns tingling all the time it’s been about five years now nothing they can do life is miserable
I get tingling hands many times throughout the day. And a lot of mornings I wake up and my toes feel like they’re crushed but also my side legs between my hips, about even with my butt are in pain to the point where I can’t move my legs sometimes for a few minutes. It seems to get worse each passing year.
That sounds really awful, Michael. You don’t have to live in pain like this. Please talk to your health care provider about your symptoms. He/She should be able to help you or will direct you to help. Best wishes to you.
I woke up one morning couple weeks ago and my right leg was numb throughout the day the numbness moved up my right side to right up under my breast and then the next day my left toes started getting numb then my left leg was numb and it worked its way up my left side of my body and now I am numb from my breast down both sides like I said it’s been going on for a couple of weeks what could this be I can still walk but I can’t feel anything
Hi April, please see your health care provider about these symptoms as soon as possible. Or consider urgent care. Best, Cheryl
Over the past few months, I’ve developed tingling in feet, hands, and now lips. It’s gotten worse the past week & especially at night. I sit for long periods, don’t exercise, eat terribly and am about 50lbs overweight. Obviously I need to change all of this. I’m worried I might have undiagnosed diabetes with or without neuropathy. I know only my Dr. can diagnose, but what can I do in the short term for relief?
Hi,
For the past year I have had a slight vibration every 10seconds for about 2seconds on the inside of my right foot. Have no idea what it is.
I have to have regular lumbar punctures and suffered with sciatica about 5 years ago. Could this be a cause of it? Just find it strange that it is happening every ten seconds. Any idea?
For a few months now I wake occasionally in the night numb all over, which went away quickly after waking. At 2AM this morning, my dog woke me, she usually sleeps at my head. I woke with the same tingling all over, but it did not go away, my pulse and breathing seemed almost imperceptible. I am 48 with relapsing remitting MS, which has been stable for about a year. I am not one to rush to my doctor, just wondering if I should be concerned?
Hello, We recommend you share with your doctor your symptoms. He/she will be able to provide the best course of action given your specific health concerns. Best wishes to you.
Just a THANK YOU to Dr Twydell and his staff for the care they provided me, and pointing me in the right direction when I had sever shoulder blade pain, and numb fingers! ( c6-c7 disc replacement solved the issue)
I am on a lot of meds and been very depressed lately and id say for roughly a solid yr I spend probably 16hrs a day in my bed and most of that time is sleeping but even when I’m awake I’m still laying down. Well all this has just started with me and also I just quit smoking cigarettes after 25 yrs at least one pack a day I however have been puffing o9a vape but I’m about to quit that also because it makes my chest kinda hurt but I have to be honest if I cough or try and clear my throat or even breath too deep my legs darn near go completely numb except for that very intense pins and needles sensation you feel like when you pass out or waking up from passing out and my legs have literally just given out from under me before and had I not caught myself with my hands on a counter top I would have face first right into the edge of that same counter top and to be honest I’m very scared right now. A little medical history about me is I do have herniated disc in my back and sciatica very bad but I don’t know if that’s related or not I just know I’m scared now even more to get up and out the bed and get much more active if its gonna results in me getting another injury please help me advise me in your opinion and what you suggest I do maybe go to the spine doctor

I’m 27 years old, and for a few weeks now when I lay down for bed my legs mainly, but sometimes my whole body will feel tingly, and hurts when my skin is touched while this is going on, and kind of feels numb. And it’s starting to get stronger and more often
Interesting post and well done. I’m here because I’m a 37 year old guy, with the last few weeks of random small spots of tingling mostly on the foot but also felt on my arm, leg, back, cheek, random spots and all on the left side. I can’t seem to find an answer anywhere and having just lost my job with 2022 layoffs, no insurance.
I am just wondering if there would be a specific reason why my complete hand would freeze to the point I can’t move it,. It feels like a knife is in the middle somewhat painful. And every morning my feet and ankles feels like I’m walking on nails ( consistant to every morning)
