Scott Smith has competed in more than a dozen triathlons, but it wasn’t long ago that the Ludington resident was looking for a way to improve his health and become more active.

Smith admits that he rarely visited a doctor and wasn’t aware of how certain lifestyle behaviors impacted his overall health.

Then he heard about a program being offered by Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital that provides free health screenings and education on various health and wellness topics.

The program is Win with Wellness.

“I used Win with Wellness as a springboard to get into the triathlons I now compete in,” Smith said. “It allows me to monitor my biometrics without having to go to the doctor every six months. I see Win with Wellness as part of my training.”

Smith says the biometric results from the Win with Wellness screenings have helped him identify how certain foods impact his health. Changing his diet and engaging in regular exercise has helped him maintain a healthy body mass index while also improving his cholesterol and blood pressure.

The screening-based Win with Wellness program started in 2012. Since then, more than 1,500 individuals have participated in the program, which is based on evidence-based outcomes, using free biometric health screenings to measure the key health indicators that are closely tied to chronic disease:

  • Total cholesterol
  • HDL cholesterol
  • LDL cholesterol
  • Cholesterol ratio
  • Blood glucose
  • Triglycerides
  • Blood pressure
  • Height
  • Weight
  • Body mass index (BMI)

As a business owner, Smith recognized that Win with Wellness was something that he could open up to his employees at Smith and Eddy Insurance as part of their workplace wellness program.

“I am just as concerned for my employees’ health as I am my own health,” Smith said.  “We know that a healthy workforce is a productive workforce.”

Smith encourages local businesses to use Win with Wellness when setting up workplace wellness initiatives.

“It’s a great program, it’s completely free and it benefits your employees,” he said.

Win with Wellness offers free biometric health screenings in June at several locations.
